About

Chemistry a branch of physical science, is the study of the composition, properties and behavior of matter. Chemistry is sometimes called "the central science" because it bridges other natural sciences like physics, geology and biology with each other. Chemistry is a branch of physical science but distinct from physics. No one could expect to master all aspects of such a vast field. Hence it has been found convenient to divide the subject into smaller areas like Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Theoretical Chemistry, and Analytical Chemistry. Chemists play a key role in the development of drugs, which help to cure and alleviate diseases and prolong the life span.

History

The Department of chemistry was established on 2011 with the undergraduate program B.Sc Chemistry in the CBCS pattern under the syllabus of Alagappa university.

2011

The department have started B.Sc Chemistry with 27 students and 3 staff members.

From 2013 onwards …

Our department offers an add on Diploma course Food Chemistry and Textile Processing. The syllabus was framed and approved by the eminent staff members.

2017

The department have started M.Sc Chemistry.

Vision

The Department of Chemistry endeavors to be a nationally-recognized model for educating and graduating students prepared to complete in and contribute to the ever-changing, technology-centered world of the 21st century.

To achieve this vision the department is committed to providing a course of study for undergraduates and post graduates in the chemical sciences which combines curriculum, scholarship and service/engagement opportunities that are high-quality, innovative and intellectually challenging and employ state-of-the-art technologies

Strength

The Chemistry Department offers strong academic support specifically tailored for B.Sc. and M.Sc. students. For B.Sc. programs, the department focuses on building a solid foundation in core subjects such as Organic, Inorganic, Physical, and Analytical Chemistry through structured theory classes and regular practical laboratory sessions. Well-equipped laboratories allow undergraduate students to gain essential experimental skills, understand chemical techniques, and develop accuracy and safety practices. Continuous internal assessments, assignments, and practical examinations help strengthen conceptual clarity and prepare students for higher studies and competitive examinations.

For M.Sc. students, the department emphasizes advanced learning and research-oriented training. Postgraduate students receive in-depth knowledge of specialized topics, advanced instrumentation techniques, spectroscopy, and research methodology. The department provides opportunities to work on dissertation projects, encouraging independent research, critical analysis, and scientific writing skills. Guidance from experienced faculty members, participation in seminars, workshops, and conferences further enhances academic growth. This strong academic and research environment prepares M.Sc. students for careers in research institutions, chemical industries, teaching, and doctoral studies.

Add On Course

FOOD CHEMISTRY - Food Chemistry course outcomes focus on understanding the chemical composition, structure, and functional properties of food components (water, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids) and their reactions during processing and storage. Students learn to evaluate food quality, safety, and stability, identifying methods to prevent degradation while optimizing nutrient content, flavor, and color.

WATER TREATMENT -Water treatment course Outcomes include analyzing water chemistry, designing treatment units, addressing regulatory requirements, and managing operational problems, often focusing on sustainability and emerging technologies.

  1. The department consistently records a high pass percentage among students.
  2. Students achieve distinction regularly in core and skill-based subjects such as Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, and Food Chemistry.
  3. A significant number of graduates pursue higher education, including M.Sc., Ph.D., B.Ed., Pharmacy and other advanced programs.
  4. The department has successfully ensured 100% placement opportunities for eligible students.
  5. PTA meetings and Alumni meetings are organized twice a year to strengthen communication and engagement with parents and former students.

Chemistry Laboratory

Our department have well equipped laboratory with sophisticated instruments such as Potentiometer, Conduct meter, Colorimeter, Electronic balance, Physical balance, Hot air oven, Distillation unit, Mechanical Shaker…. etc.

We have separate Gas connection Pumps and tap facilities. We have enough quantity of glass apparatus and chemicals to be used for the students. Chemistry lab was constructed with the conveniences of the students with total estimation of 5 lakhs. At present there are 45 students are there in our department.

The Staff and Students of the Dept of Chemistry will strive together to achieve and maintain high academic standards through sustained, hard and creative work in teaching, learning, Research and extension work in an atmosphere of mutual respect and healthy human relationship to cause the holistic development of students.

Activities

The department conducts an annual association meeting to encourage academic interaction and collaboration among students and faculty members.

An academic club titled “CHEMISTRY WORLD” is organized once a month to enhance students’ interest and knowledge in chemistry.

The “MARIE CURIE CLUB” meets every week to provide opportunities for students to showcase and develop their talents.

Every year, the department organizes intra-departmental competitions to improve students’ confidence and competency.

Scientific events such as World Ozone Day and National Science Day are celebrated annually to promote scientific awareness among students.
